Xerox Litigation Services’ CategoriX process combines the judgment of experienced
attorneys with patented automated document classification technology to make large-scale
document review more cost effective, consistent, and accurate. Attorneys most familiar
with a matter drive the review process by “training” the CategoriX technology.
CategoriX effectively:
- Enhances the accuracy and consistency of review
- Reduces the cost of document review
- Minimizes the number of documents for manual review
- Increases the speed of document review
How it Works
The CategoriX process is fully transparent; it begins with the manual review of a small
subset of the total document population. The documents in the subset are coded (for
example, responsive or non-responsive) by attorneys directly involved in the case. The
attorney-coded subset is then used to “train” CategoriX to classify the larger remaining
document population according to the parameters set by the attorney reviewers. The process
is iterative; adjustments can be made as more is learned about the case and the documents.
CategoriX “learns” as the legal team learns, and modifications can be quickly implemented.
Since only a small percentage of the documents need to be manually reviewed by attorneys,
significant time and cost savings are evident.
Using Statistical Measurements to Judge Accuracy of Document Review
Each document classified by CategoriX is given a ranking indicating the probability that
the document belongs to a modeled category. After the score is derived, the statistical
measures of “Precision” and “Recall” are used to determine the success of a CategoriX
model.
- “Precision” = the ratio of relevant documents retrieved to the total number of documents retrieved.
- “Recall” = the ratio of relevant documents retrieved to the total number of relevant documents.
After the initial results are computed, the legal team may need to review additional
documents in order to maximize Precision and Recall to meet specific objectives for the
matter. Applying statistical measurements allows the team to increase the accuracy of
document review.
Quality Control and Defensibility in Document Review
The CategoriX process includes unique quality control measures to ensure the consistency
of your review and increase defensibility. As the attorneys learn more about the matter,
CategoriX can be fine-tuned to modify earlier judgments. For instance, CategoriX will
recognize when two similar or nearly identical documents were categorized differently by
attorney reviewers and will flag the documents for further review. By catching the
inaccuracies, you not only have increased consistency in your review, but have added a
layer of quality control to increase review accuracy.
